BPSC (CSE)
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to recruit candidates for various prestigious administrative positions in the state government of Bihar. Known for its high standards and competitive nature, the BPSC CSE is one of the most sought-after examinations for aspirants aiming to serve the public and contribute to the governance and development of Bihar.
The exam selects officers for key roles such as Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Block Development Officer, Revenue Officer, and other allied services. Through this exam, BPSC identifies dynamic individuals with strong leadership, analytical thinking, and a commitment to public welfare.

The BPSC CSE is conducted in three stages:
- Preliminary Examination – Objective in nature, acts as a screening test.
- Main Examination – Descriptive papers testing depth of knowledge.
- Interview (Personality Test) – Evaluates personality traits, awareness, and suitability for civil services.
The Preliminary Examination in the BPSC Civil Services Exam is only a qualifying stage. Its marks are not counted in the final merit list. The purpose of the Prelims is solely to screen candidates for the next stage — the Main Examination.
Candidates who clear the cut-off in the Prelims become eligible to appear for the Mains. However, their performance in this stage has no bearing on their final selection.
The final merit list is prepared on the basis of a total of 1020 marks, which includes:
- Main Examination – 900 Marks
- Interview (Personality Test) – 120 Marks
This means that only the marks obtained in the Main Examination and Interview are considered while preparing the final list of selected candidates.
Hence, while the Prelims is an important hurdle to cross, it is the Mains and Interview performance that ultimately determines your success in the BPSC Civil Services Examination.
S.N. | Prelims | Mains |
---|---|---|
1. | In the Preliminary Examination, the focus is broader and more objective. The paper primarily includes: General Studies (GS) Current Affairs (National & International) General Mental Ability (Reasoning) Quantitative Aptitude (Math) | On the other hand, the Main Examination is descriptive in nature and tests the candidate’s depth of understanding, analytical writing, and clarity of thought. It mainly includes: General Studies Papers Optional Subject (in some BPSC exams, depending on notification) Data Interpretation (basic quantitative analysis and graphical interpretation) |
2. | This stage is designed to test a candidate’s overall awareness, analytical thinking, and speed, making the syllabus wide-ranging and dynamic, especially with the inclusion of current affairs and aptitude-based questions. | 📚 Narrower Yet Deeper Interestingly, although the Mains exam requires deeper conceptual clarity and writing skills, its syllabus is narrower and more focused compared to the Prelims. Candidates are expected to prepare specific topics in greater depth rather than covering a wide range of subjects superficially. |
